Scouts second camp 2009

Our second camp was following on from the huge success of 2008's survival camp, only this time the weather was much kinder to us. Held in a local farmer's woodland in May of 2009, this relaxed, back to basics camp saw 12 youngsters camping in shelters which they had constructed themselves. During this camp the Scouts were preparing foods such as rabbits, cooking solely on open fires with only a few billies and rudementry utensils, with no tin foil in sight!

Scouts second camp 2009

Our first camp of 2009 was held on a fantastic weekend in April, sited on farmland near Rugeley. 25 10.5 - 14 year olds attended the camp, which was based around traditional scouting skills, of axe and saw work, bivouacking and cooking. The final day saw the youngsters take part in a treasure hunt over the 5 acre site with the winning patrol being awarded a headtorch each.

Expedition Challenge

Each year a small number of older, experienced scouts attempt the arduous expedition challenge around Cannock Chase which counts toward their Cheif Scout's Gold Award. This weekend is not an easy undertaking, with just a handful of scouts planning and writing their own routes, and more importantly hiking along them while carrying all of their personal kit, trangia stoves and food. The weekend commenced at Upper Longdon before hiking to the Beaudesert Trust campsite, camping overnight and walking back along a different route the next day. Over the weekend the youngsters were certainly put to the test by the typical British weather, yes, we had a few soggy scouts and leaders that weekend! Also on their hike they had to complete a further challenge, to collect a leaf from 5 set trees and write a grid reference for their location.
